Intruders Welcome? The Beginnings of Satellite Television in Hungary

Until recently the reception of foreign satellite programmes was strictly forbidden in Hungary on ideological, economic and legal grounds. At the end of 1987 a sudden change in policy legalized the reception of satellite programmes in Hungary. This article traces the intriguing causes and likely effects of this new policy initiative.
